Super loud hum from rear of car...Diagnosis requested
Hello,
Recently my 1986 Coupe GT started humming really loudly when driving, even at slow speeds. It gets the loudest around 65 MPH, and then seems to quiet down around 75-80MPH. It sounds like it is coming from the back, like maybe the rear axle? Does anybody know what this is, or has heard of it in other Coupe GT's before?
Thank you for your help,
Peter

Bearing? Broken belts in tire?
If you swerve (obviously at low speeds, not at 80) does it get louder on a swerve to the left or right? If you run your hand along the sidewalls of each rear tire, are there ripples in them?
Cheers!
Cheers!

brakes sticking? 2nd on bearing and tire. try.....
getting the rear end off the ground. then see if you can wiggle the wheels at all. if you can, check the bearings. turn the wheel around by hand, any sticking or sound? if yes, probably a sticking brake or crud got into the brake. rub your hand over the tread of the tire as well. feel for high or low spots. then switch the tires around, back to front. if that changes the sound to the front, you definetly have a bad tire.
my first guess would be a bad bearing.
