Default Bentley says lifter clatter upon cold start is normal.

Should go away after 2-3 minutes though.

it just takes a couple of moments to press up the lifters that leaked down over night.

My fox was like that for 12 years with me and on the road over 14 years and over 245k and no visible wear on cam.. so....

Default Sir: here is what Bently says about Lifter Tick:

From page 15.21

"Noisy lifters may be replaced after the following checks:

-run engine until radiator fan comes on at least once

-bring engine speed up to approx. 2500 rpm for 2 minutes
*If valve lifter is still noisy, replace

Default 1985 VW Jetta Diesel oil filter (Mahle) was my cure.

Along with 15W40 in the winter and 20W50 during the summer. Silenced those lifters right up, even at startup.

Default If it sits for a day or two...

The lifters rattle for a few seconds on start-up. It's done it since the day it was new. Castrol GTX 20-50 (not exactly cold weather here however...) 140K miles.

Default Ditto that, I'm tick-free as well.

Lifters are new-ish, a little under a year old. 20w50 every 3k, and I'm quiet.

Default Re: Wow. .I thought my 96 A4 with 52k miles was low mileage. You sir are crazy low.

Just got the car last nov. and have put about 8,000 miles on her since. She had quite a history before I got her...
