The Wandering Coupe: Halfway Around the World. KLUNK!
I think I may have narrowed my wander down.
1) That PANG! isn't the battery; it's coming from the firewall right behind the steering wheel. Duh, gotta be the rack. I'm gonna rule out inner tie rod ends because the alignment stays in; the center point (null) just moves around a bit).
I'm guessing that either the whole rack is moving, the inner tie rod carrier assy. is moving/loose or there's quite a bit of play in the rack/pinion. I know the manual version has adjustable play, but can the power unit be set as well?
2) The tranny mount must be utter ****; under heavy engine compression decceleration (upshift), there's a clunk and suddenly I can hear the transmission whirring. I think it's actually klunking up against the tunnel. Either that or the rubber in the mount is so far gone that there's now metal to metal contact where rubber is supposed to cushion when the trans. lifts.
Thoughts? It's dark out and I probably won't be able to get under the hood for a couple days.

Tie rod carrier
There are two bolts that hold it to the rack. You may be missing one of them. Especially if someone put them in incorrectly (from the bottom, not from the top)
I've seen a car (in fact mine when I bought it) with one of the bolts backed 1/2 way out because they were put in upside down. It's much easier to put them in that way because then the battery tray isn't in the way as much.
