Default What size speakers fit in the rear deck?

I have some ****ty 4" 2 way speakers in there now. I'm wanting much better sound quality though. The highs are ok but I need more bass. The problem I see is that the mounting area on the rear deck isn't very big. Seems like I'd only be able to fit some 5" speakers back there max. What do you guys think? Post some pics of your setups please! Thanks!

My current setup. 4" JVC.

From your picture, I'd say so. It's flat in a wider area than yours appears to be

Default An Alternative..

You can 'sort of' get 6x9 speakers to fit. But no matter what you do, you have the problem of mounting only onto 'cardboard', and still having almost no large area for the speakers to work into (they don't really work into the large space of the trunk because of the metal back deck)

See the link below for Huw's solution.. :-)

Default That seems like a big job.

I searched the forum and found some pics that I believe you posted of a 6x9 install using the metal deck as the mounting point. Requires some dremel work though. I wonder if a good, quality set of 5 1/4's would sound good enough. Hmm....

Default big job = better sound!

The back deck (metal cutting) was on a 4k, so the speakers could mount on the metal, and work into the whole trunk area. Sound comes up through the existing speaker openings in the 'cardboard' deck. Definately an improvement in the bass response.

I'm not sure that cutting into the metal deck to mount the speakers would work so well in a coupe, as the speaker opening in the cardboard is at more of an angle...

Default How to get the cover off the rear deck..

First, you have to take out the rear seats.
Pop up the front of the bottom seat, then take it out.

Then, push up (an out at the top) on the back seat cushion. IF that's never been out before, the top corner tabs may need soem 'unbending' from inside the trunk. (That little problem took me over an hour to figure out!)

Once the rear seats are out, undo any child restraint anchors in the middel of the deck.

You can then see the front edge of the back deck. Unbend any tabs, and start to carefully work the deck loose. Once you get it loose a bit, pull some slack on the rear seatbelts to allow the deck to move out.

From then on, sort of self evident..

Check back in when you can't get the seat cushions back into place.. :-)

Default Good point about the angle.

I think I'm going to get out my old amp, run the wiring, and power the speakers I have in there now. See what difference that makes, then upgrade the speakers (as needed) and power them with the amp. That should make a big difference. I may just have to deal with getting 5.25" speakers.
