"GL 4" is a 'formulation as it were. Sort of 'what's in the oil'. A 'type' of oil, sort of..
You still need to get the right 'weight' of oil, (same idea as motor oil), as specified for you transmission.
Just read the small pring on the container that it's GL4 or not.
(GL5 can be bad for some synchros, but good for final drives. Just depends on the application)

Good trick, thanks I'll try that.
lol, that's funny about being at stoplights shifting down from 5th. Hope mine doesn't get that bad before I get a chance to fix it.

So I need to look for more on the container besides GL4?
I'm confused. Is GL4 all I need to look for or is there some type of specific weight I need to pay attention to as well?

haha yeaaa. i got in a pretty intense yelling match with some a$$hole once..
needless to say i terrorized him with my ten valve shortly after 8-)

it's a 17mm on the underside of the tranny (if the same as a quattro drain plug at least)... BUT
MAKE SURE the fill plug comes out BEFORE draining the fluid! This is key, otherwise you could be up a creek w/o a paddle so to speak
