I used to have a 78 VW Van that would run out of gas at about a quarter tank.

Default If your gauge doesn't read full when topped off there

is a way to adjust it.. Take the cover off of your instrument cluster, you will see a lever type deal on the top.. You will notice that if you move the lever the face of your fuel gauge actually moves up and down.. (behind the needle)Top off your fuel tank, move the face of the gauge until the needle is pointing to full, and then your all set and ready to put it back together..

Default Which line are you talking about?

I would just like more detail, cause I often run around with the car on first red mark. Whats ur gas milage? Im getting combined 27 mpg (city\hwy) with winter studs on premium.

Default pass a quarter tank.. go through allll the red and theres this itty bitty line at the very bottom..

thats when i start to get in trouble and i know i have to find gas. i dont know my mileage bc the odometer laughs at me when i check it. but for my car, i dont know how yours is adjusted, anywhere in the red is smooth sailing.

My gauge reads full when topped off, however seems to drop to the half mark rather quickly... and hovers down towards the empty rather slowly. Had the same experience with the other "83 4000s I owned. Get 29mph, so am not too worried about it, however was wondering if anyone else has this?

Default It's adjustable

Rather than adjust the guage, Audi figured out to adjust the BACK of the gauge, where the lines are. There's this (probably rusted) bar on the right side of your instrument pod. Taking off the plastic top will help get at it. Push it up and down according to tastes. On mine, I adjusted it all the way up, but the needle still didn't go to full, so I figured it was just something to do with the sending unit in the tank.
