Default Why does a cable connect the center and rear diff? So it's not a vacuum only system

I started looking at page 34.14 in RED Bentley - and why do they need this cable? I thought it was just vacuum activated.

I checked Huw's site - Nadda. I guess he just had a cgt.

Default Re: Why does a cable connect the center and rear diff?

That cable connects the center actuator (loacated at the back of the car) to the transmission diff lock.

You DO have two actuators, but they are both physically located at the back of the car. On really old urq (and maybe old 4kq?) both actuators worked together (only one positon of control). Later setup let you turn on center diff before the rear diff (two positions on the control)

On later quattros, they moved the center diff actuator up to the front of the car, and ditched the cable. Uses a rod (#16) from the actuator at the front right of the transmission instead.

(As below...)

Default Thats good news , cause at least I can get the rear to lock if this cable goes NLA.

I bet the cable is already NLA for an early 83 urq.

I couldn't see if it's still present on my car. I crawled but saw nothing. Yesterday I had the LR wheel off and I could see the 995A vacuum unit is there, but I didn't know to look for the cable at that time.

The lock unit on the console is partially disassembed - so I never tried it.

THanks

Default if this cable goes/has gone NLA...

if this cable goes NLA, and one were clever..

I'd bet that one could probaly figure out a way to do the newer front mounted diff lock instead?

I'm thinking that the cable on my urq is one corroded lump. :-(
