Default $5 fan resistor from the boneyard works!

The radiator now comes on when the A/C is turned on and it's no longer loud. I haven't seen it on any other times but I haven't tested it long enough. It's only been on for about an hour. The old yellow one completely disintegrated in my hand. Both halves were already apart when I went to pull it out and the metal pieces completely came off by touching them. All three of the nuts holding the wires on were a pain to get out too.

How will I know for sure if this blue resistor works all of the way?

There are three connections to this resistor.
E1, E2, E3
E1 is for low speed
E2 is for second speed and
E3 is for high speed.

E3 is a direct connection without having any resistance.

E1 works in series with E2, so if your low speed is working then the resistor is working properly.

E2 is for second speed which doe not use E1

Cool, that's one less thing I have to worry about.

On a side note I test drove a 2003 kia rio tonight. Pretty nice little car for being a brand spanking new subcompact, it's definitely the nicest looking super small car available right now. Only has 21 miles on the odometer and the $7k price tag sure is sweet too.

I came **this** close to buying it tonight and I might still go back and buy it tomorrow if they still have it. With that 100k mile warranty it would definitely be my reliable transportation and the audi...well the audi could be what I take up skiing. Assuming it survives that long

Hmm, the more I think about it the more I want to go and buy a new rio. Those new kias are pretty sharp looking cars. Pretty gutless compared to the audi but that's what I expected. Still a hell of a lot faster than walking (something I've done a lot of lately).

Default Feel your frustration.

Sometimes, you just need that simple, reliable, appliance-like transportation to get you to work and back (And the auto parts store!).

The Audi simply tests your frustration tolerance.
What you're going through is nothing most of us hasn't already, or is still going through.

I know I'm sorry to have bought my 1990 200q. But after dumping so money and effort into it, it makes no sense to ditch it now. In the meantime, I hope it'll finally be reliable, the list of broken items stop growing.

Benbaked,

Where do you go skiing? I'm from the Midwest and I usually take a trip out West or Vancouver BC to ski the Rockies. I either go in mid Jan or 1st week in April to do some spring skiing.

Best place I've been to is Tellluride Co.

I'm in washington state so I usually hit up Crystal mountain, snoqualmie pass, or stevens pass. I've been told I should try Mt. Baker but a part of me is a little afraid

Default I went dirt biking in Telluride about a year ago..

<img src="http://homepages.wwc.edu/student/georal/bike_rear.jpg">

There is a ride in Colorado every year called the Colorado 500. I went on it last year and it was some of the best views I have ever seen. All the old mines are really cool as well. The ride isn't easy though since you have to 500 miles in a about 5 days. Its about half single track riding and half jeep roads. Malcolm Smith is usally there and he can still ride like crazy for an old guy!

Oh has any one ever heard of Schwitzer Mountain? Because its a pretty big ski hill, in Sandpoint ID. I live in Sandpoint in the summer when I am not a school At least Christmass break is coming up soon

Any way enough OT rambleing from me.

Yes these cars can be frustrating at times, but when they running on an open road with no problems them you can relax and think what a great car. You'll appreciate these cars more in the snow or on a long drive.

I'm on my third audi now with the last two being quattro. I sometime wish that I should have kept the 5000 CSTQ. The Quattro V8 is a fun car, but I do miss that turbo.

Whenever I ride in my wife's Honda Civic, I realize that unless you driven an Audi you don't know what you're missing.

Default Don't get me wrong, Audis are fun to drive, but...

my opinion is that a type 44 shouldn't be your only vehicle. If it's your primary car, these breakdowns will be inevitable, and it'll eventually break and you must deal with it. Unfortunately, it's usually when you need your car most.
With a 2nd vehicle available, these occurrances are easier to accept. You won't be left out in the cold by them. You can fix the Audi at your convenience.

As benbaked had stated, it's jeopardizing his job. NO CAR, regardless of make, should place you in that position. If you're a struggling college student, or can only afford one car, this isn't the car for you.

The type 44, especially the (turboed) quattro versions, should be considered as an enthusiast's car. The list of issues with this car, should be taken as a 'must do' list for any new buyer. It isn't a list of "could go wrongs", but a list of "will definitely go wrongs"! Replace and repair all these items and you'll have a reliable car.
Unless one can enthusiastically afford to restore one to its perfect running condition, one shouldn't kid themselves that this is a reliable car, given the high mileage of most examples.

Like other fun to drive, and memorable cars, this Audi is high maintenance.
