Default 1986 5kT Throttle Position Switch Q & A :

Hi guys....and any gals out there too.

I recently opened up my throttle position switch in an attempt to repair it per SJM. The switch clicked when rotated, but the solder contact was gone. Fixed this, and re-installed. Not sure how long my butchered solder will last, so i'm looking for a spare.

Checked Autohaus, and the part number came up 280-120-308. Well I looked at the part # on my old one, and it was 280-120-310.

I also saw other TPS's that looked exactly the same, with last 3 digits of 300,301,325, etc. Of course they all varied in price (+ or -30 bucks), and could also be used on BMW, Ferrari, Volvo, etc with CIS.

Can someone explain to me the diff between the top two part #'s ? Is one for turbo, the other for turbo quattro ... or are they roughly inter changeable ?

Can the other's be used on the 5kT, or do they each have their own Idle/Partial WOT/WOT specs ?

Inquiring minds want to know !!!!

Thanks...
Marv

Default I would (or have someone here?) check on ETKA to see if the part has been...

superceded to one or the other. You/they could also confirm which p/n is the correct one for your car.

HTH,
Jim

niether bosch nor etka lists the throttle switch as a separate part for 5kt cars, the 310# shows in bosch as fitting bmw, citreon, peugeot, the 308#fits porsche 924/944.as for as specs possibly repair info for those cars might tell you something, there are difference in that some are just switches some are potentiometers

Okay....that makes sense, if some are potentiometers, and others are simply switches. Maybe some go to WOT sooner than others...5cyl vs. 8cyl...10v vs. 20v ? Glad you can now buy these separately, without having to purchase the whole throttle assembly. Guess i'll stick with the 310# since that was the one on the car Thanx !

Default There would be no potentiometer in your MC1. It's a simple open at idle...

and at WOT. Anywhere in between, you are closed loop, and the ecu/o2 sensor are controlling the mixture.
