1991 200q20v boost anomalies
i've been borrowing my friend's IA3+ since last year. initially, the boost would be tame until about 3500rpm - then you'd get pinned back in your seat. sort of and brash transition actually.
then it would start blowing off after 6psi. 034 fixed the issue - leaky boost lines and corroded ecu ground wires. they inspected the turbo, waste gate, N75, exhaust - pretty much everything. gave the car back. hits 1.7-1.8 bar with the IA3+ every time (3bar map sensor so gauge reads lower). but the powerband is not quite as aggressive, it seems. sort of tame actually, even though it still hits the same boost (at least on the stock gauge) as it always has. javad had an aftermarket gauge on it - the car does hit full boost.
my friend recently took the IA3+ chipped ecu back and put it in his car. his car behaves like my car USED TO - i.e. stupid fast once on boost. and this is how he always remembered the chip behaving in his car. of course he's eaten two turbos and a bottom end over the last decade...
not sure if my car is "normal" and the violent transition once on boost is the effect of a boost leak and its overboosting the turbo. or i have some other issues.
to cut to the chase, what are some other things to check out if you are building full boost, but just not getting that kick in the pants anymore?
the car does not stutter, idles smooth, runs smooth. oil pressure is 2 psi at idle and hit 5 psi once the rpms climb. it has samco hoses, 034 silicon breather hose, 034 billet bypass, turbo is good, bypass is good, N75 is good, new timing belt, water pump, cam and crank seals, and much more. the 02 sensor is pretty new too. never throws the Check engine light. compression and leakdown numbers are solid
i'm currently running an 034 stage I chip.
is there some sensor somewhere that could be screwing with the timing or a/f? is there a throttle position sensor on these cars? maybe the computer thinks the throttle isn't wide open? regardless, she should be throwing you through the back window with 20+ lbs of boost, no?
i'd really appreciate any advice.
