i am looking to upgrade the performance and would like any suggestions as to what to do for better acceleration, power etc. Also i want to know if i can change from a 3 speed to a 5 speed.

If it's a turbo with an automatic, you could swap it to a five speed but it takes some doing. I remember someone on the quattro list did a autobox to 5 speed swap on a normally aspirated car, but they said it took some beating on the transmission tunnel to make it fit.

If it's normally aspirated and auto, you may want to swap in a five speed, but if you want highest bang for the buck get a turbo quattro. Lotsa fun when chipped, just don't buy a cheap maintenance-deferred one: it'll drive you into the poorhouse real quick, many have bought cars hoping for the best but have discovered the neglected ones are money pits. Buy the best one you can find, maintenance records are a big plus and if the expensive stuff has already been done (replaced the steering rack, clutch, heater core, etc.), that's an even bigger plus.
