'91 100 Repair
This car has about 95k on it. Appearancewise it's in great shape, inside and out. I put a lot of $$ into it recently include new Conti tires. Now it needs a heater core ($750).
Is it possible to bypass the heater by disconnecting the core and having the hose bypass it? With electronic control, would the a/c still work? It will only be used in the warm weather for short local trips. It will sit in the garage during winter.
Can it be done or is it a crazy idea?

That will work.
I've done it. No big deal.
BTW you can buy a new core for less than $100. It's a pain to replace, but requires no special tools. You can do it in a day with a friend's help; allow a second day to tidy things up.
It's one of those "while I'm in there . . ." jobs: it makes sense to replace the blower when you replace the core.

The heater core is the smaller radiator looking thing on the right side of the drawing below. The thing the hoses to and from the core pass through is a grommet at the firewall. The rain diverter over the HVAC well between the firewall and the bottom of the windshield covers the box that contains the heater core. The two hoses are connected to the heater core at the driver side of that box beneath the rain diverter. You could get a U-shaped piece of copper plumbing called a 180-degree return bend like

Or you could get a 90-degree elbow and a street elbow to fit together to make the 180-degree turn. Then just disconnect the two hoses, insert the plumbing part(s) and you've isolated the heater core with the least disturbance. Alternatively, you could pull the two hoses out of the grommet and hook them together with a piece of straight pipe.
