Audi 5000 1987 starter replacement how do I do it

walk you through the steps.........
have the replacement starter at hand, so you can see where the mounting bolts are located. The hole location on the starter will show you that. This helps you find the bolt locations on the starter that is still on the car.
Suggest first using a detergent cleaner and garden hose to wash off all the crud that will be on existing starter.
Disconnect positive lead to battery, located under back seat.
Disconnect wiring to front facing of the starter.
Unbolt the two fastening bolts holding the starter to the car. Both are very long bolts. I think one may have a washer and nut on one end. The other, I think threads into the engine block. Use a lot of spray penetrating oil, if bolts are heavily rusted. Let the oil soak in for a while before wrenching. You do not want to break any bolts.
It is a lot easier to jack up passanger front side, remove the road wheel, to give you good access to the starter. It is a relatively easy job, takes about 45 minutes to complete. Good luck.

Re: walk you through the steps.........
I'm pretty sure one of the bolts threads into the STARTER flange (not the other way around) while the other has a nut and washer on it and goes through the starter flange.
If you're jacking up the car, make sure you support it with something other than a jack while you're under there.
Be sure you remember (or take digipix) the arrangement of wires on the front end of the starter so you know where the wires go.
Clean the area the starter mounts to really well. The starter grounds through the flange.
There isn't a lot of room for swinging wrenches where you have to turn the bolts on the back of the bell housing flange.
