Default Back from Toronto-Florida trip 84 5000S

First of all, I would like to say thanks to Tom, Russ and Larry for making our little get together possible and driving 4 hours each way from and to Fort Lauderdale. I thought we had a great conversation. It would be great to see you guys again sometimes.
Yes, our Audi made another long distance trip trouble free. The return drive was a bit boring as we were followed by rain for like, 600 miles. Fuel economy was once again great despite full load and upkeep with fast driving cars. I do have precise info (full tank on departure, full on the other measuring point), so if you guys have interest I will do the calculations and post it.

Default Yes, it was nice to meet you, as well as Larry

Misery loves company . . .

Please let us know the gory details of your car's MPG.

Also, search this forum for the word "ultrasonic".

Glad to hear that your trip was a safe one.

Default It was a real pleasure to meet you Zoran

Glad to hear the return trip was safe. Post your trip numbers when you get a chance. Next year hopefully the timing will be better where you and Larry will be in town at the same time for a longer period of time.

Many thanks again for the parts.

Default Thanks for that Post article

I also picked up the Sunday paper and read the story. There was no easy way of getting around that one!
Speaking of gas mileage, with the nearly 2 hours of bumper to bumper traffic plus constant AC, we managed 28 mpg for the trip.

Default Some trip statistic

On one measured distance of 1740 km (1087.5 miles) I had tanked 40.8 gallons of regular gasoline. That makes an respectfull average of 26.6 mpg (or 8.9 liters per 100km). Like said in earlier post, I did not try to break any record, car had full load and I was quite heavy on the gas pedal. The total cost for a gasoline on that leg of the trip was US$85. My all time record with same Audi was 29.7 mpg on the same Toronto- Florida route several years ago, but that time I did drive very modestly (slower speed, less load, narrower tires). Yes, the car is a 5sp non turbo/non quattro WU engine, and yes, it is a very different story with the city driving where the car gets only about 19 mpg.

Actual GOOD gas mileage on the highway?? Getting my hopes up here, my '87 NF motor auto Avant gets like 18-19 city. Haven't had it long enough for a highway trip, but now I have some HOPE!

Default Impressive gas mileage

I'm sure that the efficiency of your 5-speed tranny contributes.

My old WU-engined automatic transmission 1984 5000S returned nothing like those numbers.

Default On your old 84, I would have to believe that

constantly running the Delco compressor was the primary cause of your poor mpg both local & hwy, the slush box didn't help either.

Were you getting worse than me on my 85?
Locally with ac on I'm getting 22 mpg. I think replacing the Delco with the Denso compressor helped a bit.

Default Yup, very good numbers

You have done a remarkable job of maintenance and TLC! Great looking & operating T44!
When my 85 Avant was new, I was able to get highway mpg's up into the high 20's. Back then the speed limit was 55 mph, that helped.
Not sure what I can get now on the highway any more, as I have not steadily driven the 85 on the highways long enough to empty a full tank of fuel for many years now.
