battery drain follow up...
As stated a few posts down, i unhooked the ground strap on the battery and connected a test light to the ground strap and the negative terminal on the battery. I finally got the light to go out when pulled the relay labeled ( water pump and fan (1st speed) ). When the relay is out their is no battery drain. Anyone know if this is a commone problem and if just a new relay will fix this? Would driving short distances without this relay be a bad idea? Just any information to help me fix this problem would be great. Thanks.

Don't know about on a 5k
But it is on a B3 chassis. Although they don't have the water pump part of that. I've got one right now with a similar problem on a 90 20V.

Fun with Audi electrical circuits.....
Unless you're Katman..maybe..very few people like tracing wires on an Audi, but that's what you need to do. Get your hands on a Bentley Manual (as Russb said) and find out where that circuit goes, what it tied to it, etc. etc. Some of the circuits are daisy-chained and can be a real bear to sort out.
Note that if any part of the circuit goes through the driver's door hinge (you'd be suprised how much goes through there) you may have a short between circuits at the hinge where the wires normally break)
Cheers!

Re: battery drain follow up...
Doesn't sound like a good idea to drive it... but i don't really know.
I had a phantom draw, and when i pulled the horn relay the battery held a charge... but it was a short in the HORN and not in the relay, so i don;t really know that just replacing the relay is going to solve the problem.
I'd imagine there may be a short in the fan, maybe more likely that in the relay. Grab a circuit tester and see if the relay is good (there should be the specs in the repair manual or online) or just go to autozone and buy a relay, and return it if that doesn't fix it.
(I took my car to autozone and pulled out the relay, asked to see their new replacement relay and an ohm tester and saw that both of them read the same, so i eliminated the relay as the problem...)
