Default crank pulley?

is it possible to replace the timing belt (and only the timing belt) without removing the cranksahft pulley? i.e. - slip the new belt over the pulley. can't really tell from pics i have been able to find online. i will be doing the repair in a less than ideal location (too cheap to pay for a tow) and want this to be as painless as possible.

Default No, pulley gets removed. Belt interferes with the pump (pump has a shroud to protect the bottom

portion of the pulley/belt).

Default Re: crank pulley?

If i remember correctly.... it's impossible, because without removing the crank pulley it's impossible to take of the lower timing belt cover. I am not too sure though, since my last timing belt job on the now RIP 5ks was done like 3 years ago...

On a side note, I don't know what you mean by "a less than ideal location," but I hope you are not fixing your car say on the shoulder of a freeway. I saw a nasty accident with some guy changing a flat on the shoulder of a pretty busy freeway. Not pretty at all. Be safe.

Hope that helps anyways,

Wilson.

Default No, you can get both covers off w/out pulling the pulley.

It has to do with the oil pump design. See my other post ;-)

Default Face it: It's a pain

Since you're gonna have the front of the engine exposed, and this requires a fair amount of labor, this is a good time to replace everything there that's questionable: certainly water pump and idler pulley/bearing. Maybe crank and cam seals. To do less is poor economy.

Somehow, do this job in a clean, dry (and safe!) location.

Depends on how good a mechanic you are and if you have the tools.

I did one with a friend a couple of years ago in an afternoon on a side street in Minneapolis where he lost his belt.

Summer weather helps a lot. Beer too.
