Electrical issue question

Electrical issue question
My sister called me tonight. Apparently she drove through a rather substantial water puddle, and all the lights on the dash came on. I would say that is a loose alternator belt as it has happened to me. But, heres the twist, her cooling fan refuses to stop running. I sent her in to the back seat to disconnect the battery so it wouldn't run all night and kill her battery.
Any ideas (solutions) to this? Why would the radiator fan continue to run like that?
TIA
Drew

Re: Electrical issue question
OK, I am tired, and only now do I realize I gave a very crappy review of my sisters predicament.
Car is a 1987 5000 S Quattro
The fan is stuck on after shutting down the car. Key off, engine off, everything off, fan stuck on...
I have been searching the forums and don't see this exact situation mentioned yet. SO, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Stuck relay in the main box: (speed 1 or 2 relay)
Position #2 (2nd speed) and #7 (1st speed with A/C) if I were guessing.
Pull them to stop fan. Probably need to replacethe bad one.

Could be a bad sensor that screws into the bottom of the radiator..........
maybe wet at the connection. Regardless, pull the electrical plug from the sensor. That will turn off the radiator fan so the battery doesn't run down. It is darn near impossible to see, as it is on the firewall side of the radiator, and buried very low up next to the engine block. However, be aware, that driving the car with the plug pulled in stop and go situations may result in over heating the motor, since the fan will not come on under any situation. It is okay to drive if you keep the car moving, since this will cause air to flow through the radiator. Good Luck..........Rooster
