Default Exciter Wire Location

I have been suffering from voltage issues so I removed and tested the alternator that was installed by the previous owner. Everything tested okay. When reinstalling I think they had the Exciter wire (blue) just grounded to one of the posts which hold the cover on. Is this supposed to connect to one of the spade connectors on the back of the alternator?

Very much so! I take it that it is the white plastic connector towards the top. Thanks for the effort.

My altenator is different than this one. Currently under the cover I have two wires which lead to the big side and two to the small side. Any ideas?

1991 100 quattro. And I mistyped earlier there was only one wire to the small side. I have that extra wire (blue) that I think they had grounded to the alternator cover.

Default Does your car have an oil temp gauge? EDIT*

If so is there a single wire hooked up to it? Also a pic would help.

Default Exciter wire is held on with a nut..

Exciter wire is held on with a nut, usually close to where the main output (big wire) comes off the alternator.

The exciter wire terminal may *look* like it's on a bolt holding the alternator together, but it's not. You can tell it apart from a 'structual' bolt, as it should have plastic insulation underneath. (The 'small' rusty nut on the right, in Kneal's picture)

The 'push on' connector in the top of the picture is for the attachment of the 'noise surpressor. It'a usually a small black box with one wire coming out of it, with the box itself bolted to the alternator case. ALternator will probalby work fine if that noise surpressor isn't installed..
