If you look at the pic of the roller you can see the little detents for the ball.

Awesome write up, I was just doing this myself.Just replaced gauge bulbs and have the seat heater..

to do and your write up is great! BTW if it helps, if you do instrument panel lights the larger Audi bulb holders have been superceeded with smaller orange VW holders that require the use of needle nose pliars to remove and install and they are a bit brighter than the stock Audi bulbs. They are a BOAB if not impossible to install by hand. If you have to replace any of these you may want to group the replacements so the gauges look uniform at night. You just saved me from buying a seat heater switch!
