To fix or not to fix...1992 100CS Tranny
Hi guys,
About a month ago my tranny went out on me and now I have a quandry.
I have $5,000 to spend to either repair the car or get a different one.
With about 120k miles on the Audi, does it make sense to get a new transmission put in (I also need a new serp belt tensioner and to fix the gas tank gauge because it is broken). OR should I just get something else? I had just recently bought the Audi when the tranny went out so I'm not familiar with what problems are common.
Also, does anybody have an idea of what the new tranny installed would run?
Thanks!

Where are you located? If you are on the west coast and the car has an auto i know of a place which will do a complete overhaul for 500ish plus shipping.

Is it a quattro?
If not, I wouldn't sink 5k into it IMHO.
A tranny rebuid should be around $2500 give or take.
A used tranny install would be much cheaperbut used is used.

I think it is a matter of enonomics.......
check out the value of the car using a Kelly or Edmunds used car price book. You can do this on line with a google search. My guess is that repairing the trany will cost more then the car is worth. If that is the case, you would prolly be better off junking, or parting out the car. I just don't see any economic sense in putting more money into a car then what it is worth.
Yea, I know how hard it is to part with a car that you prolly love so much. If you didn't love your car, you wouldn't be on this Audi Forum.
