Headlights on my '85 5000S are not very bright...

I use PIAA bulbs
Headlights are a weak spot with the 5000 S. On my 1986 5000 S I put in the PIAA Super Whites. A little better, but not a lot. Bulb replacement is easy. If you have any problems, let me know.

Not much you can do with the crappy DOT lights...
the problem with the DOT lights are the crappy reflectors and inadequate light dispersal of the lense pattern. If you were to put in a higher wattage bulb you would technically have more light output but you would not be able to broadcast it correctly. So there is no potential gains in even bothering with a brighter bulb in the DOT lights...
Only way to go for better lighting is with a nice set of driving lights or a set of expensive Euro's lights...

check out HELLA lighting --- they have replacement buckets that might work and you could install H4 80/110w bulbs -- they would need a relay system to prvent the wiring from melting ---good luck!
