hey impalass96lt1...and more questions...big surprise
so is that rubber part something that can be removed and a new one put on...or is it one whole unit? thanks
and thanks to the rest of you about the fuel filter advice. i'm going to change it soon, and i'll be careful about the lines
i also just came across a new problem...my battery light and volt lights are coming on. i was hoping for the battery or the alternator belt, but both seem to be fine. i looked on sjm and got some ideas. i have an alternator that i can get from another car of mine...any ideas from any brains out there?? thanks

charging issues...
these have been covered plenty. Check your battery level prior to starting You can measure at the teminals on the battery as well as under the hood. They should be virtually identical and close to 12V. If this is low try another battery. After starting you should see 14.5 volts. If not then you may have a bad alternator. Try the battery first sice it is easier.

If the problem is the ALT Voltage Reg.
It really inexpenive and easy to fix ... You don't even have to take the alternator off the car ... see link attached .
Note / there is also away to pull the voltage information off of your climate control system,.<ul><li><a href="http://replacement.autopartswarehouse.com/parts/autopartswarehouse/wizard.jsp?year=1987&make=AU&model=5000-QT-001&category=All&part=Voltage%20Regulator& amp;dp=false">http://replacement.autopartswarehouse.com/parts/aut

Most likely a bad VR...
Simple replacement. 2 screws hold it on. Unscrew, pull out, confirm that the brushes are worn, replace.
The only hard part is removing the alternator backing plate if it's still there.
I just had to do this a week ago. Car started to not charge at all and ran on battery power only.

How do you figure??
12/85 is at latest a early 86 model not a 86.5..
and people wonder why I quit posting on here anymore. too many people who "know it all"
I think I am going to drop this forum.. it's no longer a place to seek help.. with people like boxer who give bad advice, and people like you who just make this forum not user freindly.
All of you who arn't like that have a good one.. maybe someday people will wake up and this will be a good forum again.
