Hours on clutch R&R?
Just for grins, and to show my wife that this isn't a walk in the park, just how long should it take to R&R the clutch on an '89 100 Quattro? I also did the rear main seal, the tranny mounts, the steering rack, and the slave cylinder. This has been my project over the last 3 weeks in the garage. Granted I haven't had a lot of time to work on it. I have maybe 25 steady hours in it though - no lift of course, never done this before, and all that's left is to bleed the clutch and flush the hydraulic system.

I think book is 10
Takes forever on ramps though. I did one on a lift with some helpers in 6. It's a tough job doing it on the ground. First time I did one on the ground it took quite a few weekends.

Alldata's flat times:
R&r clutch: 8.3 hours for clutch disk
Add 0.4 hours to r&r flywheel
R&r slave cylinder, in car: 0.8 hrs (does not include time to bleed)
R&r steering rack: 5.3 hours
IMO, a decent professional mechanic will rarely match these times on the first job, but should do so on subsequent times.

This one lasted 175K miles...
Scary, but I think the rest of this ol' girl has another 175K in left in her.....
The rack I pulled had "ZF Remanufactured" tagged on it and there were service records of it in the glovebox. I guess the racks go out twice as fast as the clutches do. The pump to bomb hose was stamped "5/88" and still looks brand new after nearly 20 years!

The "5/88" could have been a hose in stock on a shelf until the remanufactured rack was installed, so it might not have been in use for as long as you think.

I paid
over $2k. The mechanic treated it like his own car cleaning and replacing stuff that would be nice to replace 'while you're in there'. I have a laundry list of stuff that was done and felt it was well worth the 3 weeks + ~$2k
I've been happy for nearly 2 years now but the shift linkage is now out of adjustment and 3rd and 1st gears are starting to pop out of gear.

I'd like to find a source for the clutch slave hose, blau has it for $112!! only place i can find.
its only a damn 1-2ft hose, but the ends are kinda unique so not many other applications.
