How "made out of unobtainium" are well functioning Type 43 turbo cars?

"Resident Expert"? wow....
Thanks Jim,
I guess I just got promoted!!!
On the Type 43's, they seem to suffer from the maladies of not being galvazined like the Type 44's were. You can expect a fair amount of rot in areas like the windshield corners, front fenders and rear fenders and vallance. As far as the mechanical end of things goes, IIRC the turbo versions weren't boosted to astronomical levels so they should be fairly reliable - oil cooled turbos (no water cooling) might have caused some concern if dino oil was used and the boost was increased. Common T43 issues were electrical gremlins (like dash flashing with turn signal on)....not that the gremlins were not "standard equipment" on T44's for that matter.....
T43 Turbos were both gas and diesel - the '83 TD parts car I have was an engine donor for a T44 tdq project.
Cheers!

IIRC, it was a 'Drive' setting where when coasting, the tranny disengaged...
from the flywheel, in essence allowing you to fully coast, thus "E"conomizing fuel. At least in my father's 83 5ktd...

Freewheeling in an Audi?
The Auto Unions had that feature - of course, they had it to preserve the engine more than for fuel economy (2-strokes DO NOT like engine braking). Never knew of the coasting feature of T43's......now, who is the expert here? Here's your crown back....

Thanks for the info! I'll keep an eye out.
I may bug you at a later date if anything ever comes about. I spent six months looking for a '93 V8 and gave up just in time to buy another 5K ;-).
I remember my Dad's N/A getting vapor look all the time (he had an '81), and the dash freaked out a couple of times now that you mention it. Oil cooled turbo's don't bother me, I was an early turbo Saab geek for years. Come to think of it, if I can own an '85-87 900T, I sure can tolerate a T43! ;-)
Thanks again!
