Default Hydraulic Sys.

I just called my mechanic about my BOMB because i have been told i need a new one very soon (if anyone has one for a '87 5000 let me know) and he said that my pedal might feel hard when driving because my power steering fluid is low, are these two things connected, power steering and brakes????

Default Re: Hydraulic Sys.

Unlike most cars which uses manifold vacuum to assist in braking, Audi uses hydraulic pressure from the PS pump to aid in braking. Stop the engine and press the brake pedal, count the time it takes until the pedal goes hard (30 pump for a good bomb) (10 or less then it's time to replace the bomb). The bomb is used in an emergency if the engine should stop running or if there is not enough pressure due to low idle or a broken power steering belt.

Even though you don't need the bomb 99% of the time the 1% when you do need it you'll be glad that it is there and working.

Default I have a spare Bomb. I don't know if I need it yet.

I yanked it out of a parts car because I needed the j-hose attached to it, and it was just easier to take the whole contraption, including the steering pump. Ha Ha. I have not yet reconnected my front calipers so I haven't been able to test the brakes yet to see if they hold a pressure charge. maybe if you remind me later I will have an answer.
