Default Long start

My 89 100Q with 250K miles would start in an instant, it's like touch and start almost, whereas my 90 200TQ takes too long to start, about 1 second long. I am afraid it this keeps up, I'll hurt the starter. Once or twice, I turned the key, hold, then released the key before the engine start. The next turn of the key would start in an instant. So it seems as though it needs to pump the gas. It was told that the injectors need service. Can someone confirm this ? Also, those Valvoline injectors' cleaners I saw in the autopart store, are they any good ? $5 bucks a bottle, and one sold for 10 bucks a bottle claims to do the entire system.
Please advice. Thanks.

Default Maybe voltage drop to starter solenoid

Sounds weird, but I had a problem that began with a small delay between turning the ignition key and response from the starter motor. Finally, the starter refused to turn. Turned out that the wire from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid (attached to starter motor) was toast. Cure: replace entire wire. Also, the switch itself was flaky, so replaced it at the same time. Strange but true. I've seen this problem on other 5000's; don't know about 100/200's, but, after all, I don't expect great electrics from any Audi.

If the starter motor spins instantly, and the engine proper doesn't fire, your injectors may be clogged. I've had great luck with Chevron's Techron fuel system cleaner: about $8 from Target stores; close to $11 from Chevron dealers.

That's what is happening. I guess it is the injectors then. What about timing belt ? Will slight stretch/loosening of timing belt do this ?

Default Hard to start when cold: Cold start valve not functioning

Hard to start when warm: Leaking injectors and/or vapor lock

http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/injector.html#inject

This is an interesting page.
If you have nice idle, but hard start, it can't be leaky injectors, I figure. Besides, I wouldn't categorize this as hard start. Just a bit long. I normally have to tap the gas pedal along to get it to start sooner.

you might also want to consider the pressure regulator im no to familer with the 200 but in my v8 i had the exact same problem and after a few months of these ruff starts the pressure regulator failed and after a new one was in it fired off right away. the main tip off that something was wrong was that there was no residual fuel pressure in the lines(easy check just start the engine turn it off and disconect the fuel line and see if a decent amount sprays out its not scinctfic but if you cant find all the fittings to make a pressure gauge connect it will do.)

Not necessarily, if you think about it, the injector could have a halfway decent spray pattern but could be leaky. The lines would then drop the residual fuel pressure to zero.

Then when you crank the car in the morning, takes a few secs (as the starter merrily spins) to repressurize the lines before the car starts.

Kind of like my car...

Default hey Steve

could it be caused for the injectors them selves leaking or would it be the seals? I was told when I bought the 86 that the seals where new but its still acting like it loosing pressure. Also what would the sytmptons of the cold state injector?

Thanks

Default pin hole leak in gas line?

had the same prob in my older 5000. turns out the high pressure line was rusted and only leaked when under pressure. when parked, it didn't have enought presssure to even make the line wet. i noticed some gas smell once in a while when standing outside the car, but thought it was related to recent fill up.

Default If it's not the injectors, then the fuel pump check valve is the likely offender

When your system residual pressure leaks down, it usually has only two ways for the fuel to go - out the injector tips and into the cylinder bore, or leaking backwards past the FP check valve back into the tank.

If you can get your hands on a fuel pressure gauge, the Bentley has a procedure to follow.

Check valve is less expensive, but harder to get to: you have to pull the fuel pump to get it.
