Default Loss of brakes, then magically self restored.........what gives???????

Driving my '87 5K, when suddenly the brakes really go bad. The pedal was nearly on the floor when I applied the brakes. I barely had enough stopping power to get it stopped at a traffic light. I drove off slowly onto a street with little traffic. I tried the brakes several times, and got the same poor braking action. No dash warning lights ever came on. The brakes were not dragging when my foot was off the brake pedal, but there was just no pedal travel. The pedal seemed to be almost on the floor, when I would move my foot over to apply the brakes.

Then after a few minutes, I applied the brakes. What a difference, the pedal was magically off the floor, and back to its normal pedal position, and the brakes work perfectly. What is going on????????

There was never any trouble with the steering function, so I don't think the problem had anything to do with the P/S pump or low pentosin.

Is this a master cylinder problem? If so, I need to get this fixed, before this happens again.

Any advise really appreciated.

Regards...........Rooster

Default Happened to me once too

I checked the MC and each wheel. The r/rear cyl was leaking.

First guess would be failure of one brake circuit and the system is reverting to a secondary circuit which changes your brake bias??? Wild shot in the dark, see any fluid on your wheels?

There's a footnote on the various safety back-ups in the brake system somewhere in the owner's manual.
