Default My first Audi, my first problem, and my first road trip! So it begins... (3 pics)

Well I just got home from picking up my first Audi!

She's an '89 200TQ, and I named her Suzi:

I live in RI, I bought the car off of Ebay for $1678, and it was in WI. My friends all thought I was nuts!

When I got the car, the oil cooler return line started leaking the first or second time I hit boost... My plan had been to drive to MN to visit friends, check out the car mechanically, and then drive it home to RI. I kept filling it with oil every 50 miles til I got to MN, then replaced the oil line.

After that, she made the ~1350 mile drive (via Rt. 90) in two sittings, one 12 hours and one 10, without a single problem. To my absolute and utter amazement, she didn't burn a single drop of oil the entire way back. I went 70-80 all the way, except for 2 hours or so of stop and go in Chicago, and got 28.1 mpg.

The car has a few gremlins, the cruise doesn't work, but the clutch pedal switch is broken -- you can start the car without pushing the clutch, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem. None of the switches on the console seem to do anything, I'm going to check and make sure they all just aren't unplugged. Are the seat heater/ABS switch/etc supposed to light up? They don't do that either. One of the window motors is wired backwards for some reason, so the switches are reversed for that window. Usual little gremlins but I was astonished at how well this car runs!

It has 186k miles now...

I was also amazed at the handling of these cars. I drove my boss's 100 for a month, many years ago, but had forgotten. It's not as good as the MR2 I had before but the car is a *whole* lot bigger. =)

Anyhow, I'm being wordy now, I guess I like the car! Just wanted to introduce myself...

Default Welcome rob:)

Sounds like a good car. allthough I would'nt take the MPG gauge seriously. Mine said I was getting 36 at one point! yeah.....right.
As for the clutch, My car starts with the clutch in or out? I never thought it was something wrong? I just thought maybe they were supposed to be like that?

Happy motoring.

Default Congratulations pal! I don't think your clutch switch is broken though. All 3 of the Audi's I've

owned have been able to be started without the clutch in. Just remember to have it in neutral!

Hi... From my reading here before buying the car, you seem like one of the more experienced owners out there. Or at least one of the more vocal

Nope, all manuals are only supposed to start with the clutch in. It's a DOT safety spec. Does your cruise work?

As far as the fuel goes, it seems to be accurate. When I was doing city driving it said 17 or so. When I drove home it started around 24 and creeped up slowly, and it seemed consistent with the amount of gas I put in. I drove 1350 miles and only stopped for gas twice. What's the tank, 22 gallons?

And yes, it seems like a good car to me. Were you the one who had the custom oil lines made up? That's going to be my next project...

I believe the safety regulation (which still isn't in every car) is that it can't turn over in gear.

I think that's a regulation as of lately, My 90/9020vq doesn't have it.

Default Nice, you were pretty close to me...

I live in Fort Wayne, IN. You woulda traveled not too far north of me on the 80/90 toll road.
Gotta love it when you pick up a car and drive it back all that way
