If it's right on the dipstick, after having returned to the sump, the level should be right.

Default Unless you are really over the limit on oil have no windage tray & are aerating your oil less

would not make a difference. But if you are aerating the oil your pressure would be down so I doubt that this is an issue. Consider that your oil and the oil that the PO used could have gunked up the lifters as well so they are not pressuring up. Before I went and tore anything down there is a product called Rislone and it is spicifically for noisey hydraulic lifters and removal of depositis and shelack left by oil residue. You might want to look into using a qt for a oil cycle and see what happens. Some will advocate the use a qt of ATF for this....DO NOT USE ATF to clean your lifters as its lubricaion properties are nill at crankcase temps and it is just hydraulic fluid. The Rislone is specifically for lifter noise. I have used it before with some success. Another thing to consider is are your exhaust gaskets leaking. This will emit a ticking noise as well. In either case if you can hear the ticking with the hood down and are not listening up close from what you say there may be an issue, but if you are listening with the hood up and your head next to the motor they all make a ticking noise under scrutiny like that.
Hope that this helps :=)

okay so ive come to the conclusion my lifters aren't all that noisy the ticking im hearing was also on my 94 toyota pickup and the same noise comes from my gfs 2005 neon and various other cars....i think i might remember someone telling me it was my fuel injectiors?....the sound isn't comming from the top on the sides of the engine but sounds more like from the front center or the top center. feedback?
