Default Doorhandle....

You can repair/replace the doorhandle without removing the inside door panel. Here's what to do:

Open the door...

Carefully pry off the chrome strip on the outside doorhandle. This will reveal a screw underneath. Undo screw.

Look on the inside of the door edge up near the where the door handle is. There will be a samll oval rubber plug that needs to be removed. Once removed it will reveal 2 screws. Carefully remove them with a magnetic screwdriver or else you may drop the screws inside the door. Now you should be able to pull the outside doorhandle out a bit to see if any of the rods have popped off or broken. Either attach the offending rod or take off the handle completely and put a replacemnet handle on. You can get a new handle at a auto store and reuse your old lock cylinder.

These old Audi handles break easily. They're inards are made of cheap potmetal.

If for some reason you still need to know how to get the inside panel off, let us know...

Hey, Stephen, isn't it a little different on Audi 100? My car does not have thechrome strip on the outside of the door handle...and it is Audi 100.
I never though that i can remove the door handle without removing the interior door panel.
Actually, to remove the door handle, i had to split the door in two parts and then after the work was done, to allign it and put it together again. It wasn't so difficult and it took me less than one hour.

First remove the armrest from the door.
(there are three hex screws on it - you'll see the holes on the bottom)
Then remove the two philips screws located close to the window, on the side of the door...they are very small but they do keep the interior door trim to the door.
Then, get a flat screwdriver and insert it between the interior door trim(vanyl part) and the door(painted part) Try to split the trim out. It's attached with plastic clips so you should be able to put it back together easily.
When all clips are deattched, lift the trim up a little and take it out.
Now is time to split the actual door into two parts. In the 4 corners, there are big bolts. Mark their exact location with a marker since it's very important for the alignment of the door when you put the two parts together.(when you are done)
You can tape the window to the door frame so it doesn't slide out when you split the two parts.
When you remove the 4 four bolts, you'll have the black part(the inside) of the door removed and you'll be able to work on the door handle easily, even replace it if needed. Just remember the location of every part/bolt/screw you remove.

Also, If you can find a helper, it will be very easy to do the whole thing.

Good luck!

Default Talking about different vehicles?

I think you are talking about different vehicles. In the UK (and all other European countries)
the Type 44 were always called "Audi 100" or "Audi 200". The first Audi 100 Type 44 was built in 9/1982.
The USA Type 44 were called "Audi 5000" up to 1989. All USA-Audi 100 are newer vehicles
(1989 and newer) and came with the flush door handles.
The earlier European Audi 100 (9/1982-12/1987) came with the older styled door handles
with chrome strip.
All European Audi 100/200 since 01/1988 came with the flush door handles.

You are right. If this is the case, all my instructions above, do not apply!
Stephen's advice/tips is what should be done.
