Default Opinions on my budget build

I'm putting my 87 5ktq down for a while to fix some things and I'm going to drive a 91 100Q that I got for $50 for a bit. Anyway I'd like to add on to my current upgrades when the car is down and I'd like you guys to give me some feedback as to what is worth it and what may not be. Keep in mind I'm a poor student in grad school. The car currently has a 2bennett ecu, spring, 3" exhaust, BPV, and 2bennett suspension.

First, I'd like to do a budget rebuild. I have no clue what the cost of this would be or what the "minimum" parts would be. I'll be doing this on a spare engine with 156,000 on it. Can someone give me a ballpark price for this???

I have a NF head to rebuild and slap on.
I also have a k24 to rebuild and put on.
There's a MC2 cam sitting in the garage too.

I was thinking of converting to a 200 flywheel also. Not sure if I'd need other parts or if it's even worth it.

CIS mods will be done to run a safe 18psi on the k24.

I'll be using an IC made of 2 stock intercoolers running vertically. This will be done by deleting the front snub mount and using poly motor mounts.

Also my brakes are shot and I was thinking of using the A6/TT/A8 conglomeration. I'll be putting my V8 brakes on the rear also.

Whew...that's a lot. Keep in mind I have a parts car and access to most of the parts from nearby junkyards. I'll be doing all of the work myself along with the help of a mechanic friend.

Don't be afraid to shoot anything down or throw in some advice. I'm not trying to build a monster for now-- just looking for about 275-300HP in this daily driver.

Thanks,
Jason

So what's wrong with the car, and how much boost are you running?

I'd say go for the head swap. The head swap may result in a few more things than you plan on but should be well worth it.

- Plane the IM and EM, weld any cracks up.
- Swap in the MC2 cam, remember to use a little assembly lube. You can do this in just a few minutes.
- I think people have suggested assembling the whole intake to exhaust down pipe on the head and then installing so you are only left with the turbo coolant lines and head bolts (or go ARP studs for much better clamping force).
- a multilayer HG is a good idea as well. It will drop your compression a hair as well.

There is some good info on s-cars.org about the max boost on the k24.

HTH.

Default Re: The car has a lot wrong :(

The main reason I won't be driving it is a hole in the gas tank. Also power steering pump is about to go, leaking coolant tank, bad rear brakes, bad front brakes, a bad wheel bearing that I know for sure. I'm also getting a burning oil smell after boost and there is oil running down the back of the engine. Engine has 236,000 on it. I'm running 12 psi and I run it hard.

The main reason for the budget build is that I need a reliable car for the next couple of years. I'll most likely use school loans to do the work so I'd like to fix what I can. I look at it like this---I could spend the 1000-1500 on the car now or find a new car. I think it's cheaper to work with what I have for now. I have most of the upgrade parts as well as the parts to fix the other crap just sitting around.
Thanks,
Jason

Leave the doggy at home when you test the boost...

Default I'm trying to do the same budget built daily driver w/ my 200.

Even shooting for the same HP range. go figure.
