Default Quattro 200 20v sluggish and dies Please Help n00b

I just bought this car last week and have loved it so far. It is a 1991 200 20v turbo quattro wagon. Recently it has began acting up. A few times in the past if I have tried to start the car after it is warmed up (run into a store and come back 2 minutes later) it will only run for a few seconds then die. I have to give it gas to keep it running. Once I give it some gas/revs for a few seconds it's fine. Now the other day I was doing about 55 mph and pulled it out of gear approaching a red light. When I took it out of gear the rpms dropped to zero and the car died. Since then it has done it numerous times on me. It also has started to be very sluggish from idle to about 2,000 rpms. I can put the pedal to the floor and the car does not really begin to move until 2,000 rpms. I was thinking vacuum leak but my problem is intermittent. Sometimes it is sluggish and other times it runs great WTF? Please help me in diagnosing my problems. Thanks in advance.

Default BPV is my quess

The symptom of stalling at stops [does it restart right away?]is classic turbo bypass valve failure, easily replaced, about $50. One on Audifans marketplace as we speak. Not sure if your other issues are related to this valve or not, quite possible they are.

Thanks for the info. It has restarted every time. Yesterday I tightened a hose clamp on a vacuum line that comes off the ISV and goes into the turbo (I think it's the ISV, it's under the intake hose and enters the turbo via about a 1 inch hose). I drove it today and the only thing I noticed was in the mountains going up a very steep pass I was in 5th gear at only about 2700 rpms and the car jerked a bit a few times. Yesterday I also found oil on my MM hose so I think it may have some cracks in it. I will replace the bypass valve and MM hose and see how that does. Thanks again and any advice is appreciated.

Default Test for air leaks

Pix is my setup for testing quickly for air leaks in the intake plumbing. Air leaks will cause intermittent strong engine hesitations under load.

You're correct that oil on the outside of the MM hose usualy means it's got splits in it. Good time to get a Samco.

And a bad turbo bypass valve will cause that stalling after decelleration.

Default Slick Setup

I like the setup for testing air leaks. I may have to make one of those. Where do you recommend getting the Samco MM? Is the ISV to the left and underneath the intake hose or is that the BVP? I guess I'm asking where the BVP is and where the ISV is. Thanks.

That's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for! Now to pull off the BVP and see if it's working or not. If it's not working do you think that could be causing the majority of the problems or is that just causing the car to shut off when I pull it out of gear? Thanks!

You can test the bpv without a mity-vac by pushing the piston open and then put you finger over the nipple. If it stays open = good if not = bad. A few other things that could cause the stalling would be a bad 02 sensor dead/dying isv. but check the vac line to the bpv 1st. Where are you located? If your not local to me (I'm in CT) I may be able to find someone in your area to help you out. Could also be a bad crank sensor or hall sensor etc.............

Couldn't hurt to change your Air and Fuel filters...and some Techron in your gas tank. Should help with the hesitation. The previous owner may have neglected these.

I just put some Lucas in my fuel tank thinking maybe I had some bad gas at first. I'm located in Denver. I've seen a couple others on here while searching threads that are in my area. I will try testing the bpv and see what happens. Thanks a ton for all the great suggestions. Can you also point me in the direction of the ISV? Thanks.

Also, is there a way to go back to a reply and edit it (perhaps if you leave info out or have a typo)? I was trying to figure it out but didn't see anything where I could edit my post. Thanks.
