Default replacing shocks - special tools needed?

I have a set of Bilstein shocks on the way, for the 5kTQ. I figure I can use a set of spring compressors for the rear struts, but to replace the front shock inserts the manual mentions tools 2069 (to remove the old shock), and 3078 (to tighten the new one). Are these really needed, or can I get by with a set of channel-lock pliers and a regular wrench?

Default It helps - a lot to have tools

I have done it without the tool and now have one. It's way easier with the right tool.

If the strut caps have never been off, you may not get enough grab with channel locks. A pipe wrench works better, but they're generally too thick to get between springs. Don't jack up the car off the ground, but maybe take a little weight off to spread the springs.

As for the nut, get the correct size hex (allen) key, (use one that fits into your socket / rachet set) and a big box end that is offset. hold the shaft with the hex and turn the offset box end.

Don't forget to paint the three bolts holding the upper strut mount on so you can get the alignment back in the same place.

Default Thanks

I'm pretty sure these are the original shocks. I guess if I can't get these things off, I'll just have to break down and buy the tools.

Where are you located?

These babies have been to OH, FLA and the New England Area. $20 rental & shipping

MAKE SURE you get a wrench FROM Bilstein to put THEIR cap on with.

Default Update

The shocks came in, but I have only installed one of the rears so far (stupid weather). I hope to finish up this weekend, but if I get stuck needing a tool I'll have to figure something out.
