Default Squealing, SCREAMING brakes (5KCST, '86)

I had my brakes done about two months ago. Almost immediately, they started squealing very loudly, like metal-on-metal. So I took the car to a different mechanic than the one who did the brake job. They said "pads are fine." The noise, apparently, they couldn't do anything about unless they did a whole new front axle brake job. $160. I thought about it for two weeks, went back, and this time they gave me a $530 estimate, claiming I needed new rotors, they they were "below spec." Hearing all I needed to, I left that shop and took the car, with the brakes still under warranty, to the guys who originally "fixed" them. He was baffled, he took off the pads, glued them, greased some things, tightened some stuff, and the brakes STILL scream like a banshee. What is with this? Am I going to have to buy a different car? I'm also getting a "click" every revolution from one of the back wheels. An ideas?

Were your rear brakes also done or just the front?
Were the rotors replaced on the first job or only the pads? My brake job done at home was less than a $100.00 with new rotors. Not a bit of noise afterward.

Default Did you "bed" in the brakes properly?

Sounds like you didn't. You might have glazed the pads.

How old are them rotors? If they're old replace them or have them ground. That should get rid of the squeal...

Clicking in the rear sounds like a bad CV/halfshaft.

Default i had all kinds of noises, did my own brake job and silent...

listed in descending order of importance/effectiveness in my opinion:

- Carefully cleaned pad slots in caliper. LIGHTLY and CAREFULLY applied some high temp brake grease to same surfaces. IMO this being loaded up with factory pad dust and not allowing pads free movement was my main problem.
- Carefully and evenly applied anti-squeal compound (incorrectly known as 'glue') to
- Aftermarket pads
- Turned the rotors for a new surface

Sounds like your guy did this the 2nd time but perhaps the pads/rotors were glazed already. He could have sanded/scuffed them up to break the glaze at the same time...

Default replace the rotors, not too expensive might want to try organic pads.

i'm using the ATE rotors with ATE organic pads, no squeaks. also, check the wheel bolt on the rear side with the noise, if someone put too long of a bolt in there it will interfere with brake parts and click, also could be a cv joint.
try thepartsconnection for rotors and pads.
