Default Steering woes

Just as I am about to sell my '91 TQ, a popping noise has crept into my steering column. I just had the power steering pump replaced and the rack is not leaking and the mechanic did not mention it was damaged in the least bit, so what is this noise? It happens during sharp turns at low speeds and is very annoying, and will probably scare off potential buyers. It sounds like something is catching on something else, and very close to the top of the steering column, near the wheel. I don't think it's a huge thing, but can I fix it? I need to sell the car soon, and I can't really afford another six-hundred dollar repair job. Thanks for your help.

Check out SJMAutotechnik.com...there's an adjustment on the steering rack...10mm socket and a couple of long extensions will get you there. I have a 5k - not sure if it applies to the 200 TQs.

Sounds more like a bad front cv joint except you say the sound is coming from the steering column.

Default Check under the dash...

...there is a U joint where the column attaches to the rack inside the car. Tighten the bolt - it has probably loosened after the rack job.

Default A favorite is the position of the column...

it is easy to set the column to the wrong height so that is catches on stuff and makes noise. The fix is to loosen the clamp as it goes though the firewall (on the floor on the inside), and move the column (likely up) until it stops catching, then tighten the bolt.
