Default Sunroof woes...? about door hinge wiring & marine wire replacement

I went thru the archives and read a ton about many sunroof difficulties for many, and the main consensus was with the door jam wiring harness, but not limited to that alone. It got stuck in the 1/2 lowered tilt position when it stopped a week ago at that point. I accessed the motor and used the 4mm hex crank to lower it.(Thanks to an AW poster ) I could hear a clicking, but no movement, prior to manual closing it with the hex. I replaced the silver relay near the motor and she took right off strongly afterward...but now with temps in the low 80's, she went up in the tilt position and I cant get her down again. I hear what I think is the motor working, but she wont come back down. The motor also has always ran strong without any hesitation. Might it not have been that silver relay and I tossed a working one, and the real trouble is the door hinge wiring? My ? about the marine wire is this: Am I just splicing in a piece of this wire to connect the broken wires? Or is it that I should replace longer sections which I think I could do, but I just dont have the time...Any takers? Beer is always cold here, and I am willing to pay the going Audi labor rate for around here and that is about $65 hour! I also read it could be that the sliders are out of sync or I have a worn gear, which I will go back in and check or maybe the power window relay that works inconjunction with the sunroof under the d/s knee panel. I guess my main ? pertains to how I need to handle the marine wire install. Thank You, All!

I don't know what you mean by "marine" wire installation, but I replaced ALL the wires in my 200q20v sedan's driver doorjamb several years ago. Prior to replacement, I could operate the driver door window if I had the door half way open. Same applied to the sunroof. Door closed, no switches worked.

Anyway, the way to repair the wires in that doorjamb is to take the door apart and splice in 16-18" long sections of wire, making good crimped connections inside the door and inside the cabin in the driver footwell. If you pull one wire at a time, it becomes a boring but not too complicated task.

I found several wires broken, a good many more almost ready to break and virtually all with cracked insulation.

You'll need a bunch of 16 or 18 gauge wire and a bit of 14 and 12. I didn't bother changing the speaker wires because they looked fine.

Default sounds like some small lever or gear or somthing like that is off track

or something like that, if you can hear the motor working it's probably not electrical ,

got any pics of your new silver ride?

Default Pictures are always helpful

You also need to get the big gears in sync. There are two micro switch which is used to raise and lower the sunroof. These micro switches are either on or off depending upon the position of the cam. By being in sync I am saying that when the micro switch indicates a close roof then the sun roof must be closed. but if the roof is open then it is out of sync.

The blue and white switches must be in sync with the red cam.

Default Any word on Burien?

Did you sell your black 200tqa?

I ended up w/ a new car for Burien (not the 1 I had emailed you about, but we'll keep that 1 secret as it may become my Burien '07 car).
I ended up getting a black '90 CQ instead.

Audi Expo 2006 - June 24th Burien, WA

Default ^^Thanks for the pix, I have not closed her up yet just in case I need to dig further...

I will give it a good look over. I know I have the main gear hole and the hex hole lined up right. I will check the other spots.(micro switches) I have manually lowered the tilt at least 6 times, and that is where the trouble is. It will not tilt back down via the switch to the horizontal postition. But it will slide back and forth without any trouble.

No pixs yet, "Q"...I have just had to do a fair amount of wrenching instead of cosmetics.

Default That sounds out of sync alright. There is a way to put the cam back in sync

Its been a while but IIRC you release a spring wire lever on the side of the gear unit. that releases the gears from contacting each other.
Next you use the hex wrench to turn the system until it likes up.
That's what I don't remember. there is a notch or something that everything aligns to. Once that is done you re-engage the gears by moving the wire lever back in place.

Isn't German engineering wonderful :-)

Default Some have talked about using marine grade wire as an upgrade to the standard door hinge wiring...

So that is what I was talking about there. Thanks for the info!

Default ^^ I saw you picked up a CQ & your pixs- I always thought a CQ w/a 3B stuffed in it would B cool

Then RS the front and rear facia's. I am working a potential sale with the black avant. Mark and his son Jake will head to Burien this year...it is not in the cards for me. Maybe next year ; )
