Default tool chest?

I've been using a cheap and narrow 3 drawer tool chest that my dad bought many years ago. He gave me all his automobile tools when he retired from wrenching and he/I never had a great place to keep all the tools.

The craftsmen tool chests are awfully spendy, but after picking up some more tools to work on the Audi I'm pretty much at the point where I need to better organize my tools.

Is there a cheap but good tool chest available out there? Home depot and Lowes has kobalt and husky but they're no cheaper than the craftsmen tool chests that are currently running a clearance. I can pick up a 6 drawer cabinet for $100 (this is 3 wide drawers and 3 small ones that take up the same width as the wide drawers.) It's black and has the openning top for more storage. I'd rather not spend the $100 but this looks like the best deal... probably pick it up today.

Default Re: tool chest?

$100 for a tool chest thats suits your needs is actually a good price. Even the knockoff stores like Kmart and Harbor freight cant really get you much cheaper than that. I have a Husky upper and lower cabinet (5 drawers top 3 drawers bottom) for $179 and it came with a free socket set for the Auto. which has really become a favorite for those roadside emergencies. You dont want to buy a box so cheap that you end up wanting to replace it because its junk. Then you spend double. Keep in mind a "respectible" Snap on or Mac box will set you back about $2500.
Up to $10000 if you have tool box envy. ;P

This is one of those things you'll use alot, so get something that will last your lifetime [as righturnclyde said, don't want to have to buy again when cheap chest's drawers stop sliding]. I have Craftsman and am happy with it [line the drawers with that rubber non-slip stuff so tools don't slide around].

Default E-Bay---$100 for the craftsman is a good deal. You are probably looking only at the top.

There is also a bottom with rollers. Believe me you will fill it up over time.
Check out the link and look at the rest of the prices to get a reality check. Don't skimp on this too much as its amazing how much more enjoyable it is to work on your car when you can find the right tools and they are organized.JMHO

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/tool-box-tecnician-box-mechanics-box_W0QQitemZ1901

Default got this one.

I can tell I will easily fill this, but along with my dad's ancient (and cheap) old tool chest I should be ok for a little while.

I may actually have a place to store my old SAE tools.

I haven't had organized tools before and they still won't be organized but I'm moving in the right direction.

6 drawer quiet glide

Default It's nice to have a big one..

but you can ad bottom cabinets to that one later. Looks like a nice box.

I saw this one a couple months ago at Home Depot and had to have it. It's really nice to have lots o' room.

Now I just need to build a work bench where that bicycle is sitting.
