Tranny Rebuild

Tranny Rebuild
I'm hoping some of you guys here might be able to give me a rough figure on what it would cost to rebuild the 5 speed tranny on my 89' 200Q. I searched the forums and found lots about how the auto tranny's bomb... but nothing about the 5 speeds though. It still works, but the synchro's (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th) are definitely on their way out. Sometimes won't go into first with the car stopped, need to roll a little to drop in or go through 2nd. Any estimates on cost to remedy this, and what else I might get done in there while it's dropped out of the car?

Re:No one seems to do a (manual) Tranny Rebuild
No one seems to do a (manual) Tranny rebuild. After considerign the effort and price, I suspect most just source a used replacement transmission instead.
Probably due to the fact that most of the parts you need are going to be dealer only (meaning $$$), and (From reading the Bentley) it seems that you need to take some accurate measurements to figure out shim thicknesses, and may need some special measuring jigs.
Some have used 'specialty' transmission oils (like Redline) to help with bad synchros. May or may not help in your case.
Is there any chance that you problem may be due to a dragging clutch, that doesn't release completely? Sounds like that would give you similar symptoms..

used tranny not expensive
I had a bearing fail in my '90 100Q, found a good used tranny from a low mileage wreck for $140, '89-'91 5 speeds are plentiful in salvage yards, not so easy to replace 5KQ Tranny

True....
There are two listed on Car-Part in Washington state alone - and across the US they're listed as low as $190 on there (and a few "Call for Price")

Re:No one seems to do a (manual) Tranny Rebuild
Hey thanks for the info guys... didn't think it would ever be that cheap for a transmission, i was thinking serious bills $$$. Definitely not a dragging clutch, it doesn't even catch until about 2/3 of the way up from the floor. Just bad synchro. Last owner had his wife doing mostly around town miles in the car, which i think is the culprit.

Re: There seems to be a ZF place in CT that does them.
They usually post ads in Car & Driver or the Quattro Quarterly (QQ) ACNA mag.
