Default Transmission Troubles

It seems I need to change the auto transmission on my 86 5KCS at 122K...why? Because of stupid things I did with it, like revving to 7000rpm frequently to impress the ricers at Harris.

Anyway my tranny won't shift to 2nd unless I accelerate to about 4K then let go of the gas. It still drives...hell I'm hoping it won't die out on me this week because of college. I plan to get it changed this week anybody know how much it should be to get it changed? Maybe I should invest in a 100 quattro for $500?

Please help...

Default Try this

I had the same sort of problem, but 2nd to 3rd. Drain and fill with Lucas transmission Cure. It isn't a complete fix, but it sure helps. Be careful on how much you refill. Even if you drop the pan, you won't drain the fluid in the torque convertor. So check the dip stick frequently while you add fluid.
I'm not sure how Audi controls the 1-2 shift. If it is seals, it will probably help. If it is clutches, I'm not sure. But it is cheap enough to just give it a try.

Default Transmission Shifts

Would over reving it to 7000 RPM really damage the transmission ? It's probably just from age. . But the reason its not shifting from 1-2 is because I know a band is applied in that shift and the seals that are used to ingage the band could be bad and that will eventually cause the band to wear, if its not worn already. Most likely the seals are bad. The transmission care would probably help if its the seals like Tom said. But if the trans, is really bad, it would have to be replaced. or overhauled

Default Re: Transmission Troubles

Your first AT rebuilt is comming up and it is $$$. I did mine at 118k miles and i did not rev my car to 7k rpm.
I had the same problem with the shifting...it needed time to warm up. After 2 weeks of hard shifting i finally gave up and i paid for the rebuilt. It was getting worse very quickly.

Try the seal conditioner if you want to buy some time and always warm up the car before moving it...at least 5-6 minutes. Do not rev it 4k rpm on 1st.

Good luck!

Just from age? The tranny shouldn't go that soon, even if it is an auto..

HA. Just curious. I know its not good but do you really get better performance by revving it to 7K ?
