Transmission troubles (long)

Transmission troubles (long)
I let my niece borrow my old 86'5KCST to go to work, and she claims that the car all of a sudden stopped or lost all power.
We had the car towed home, and I checked the transmission fluid, it is black in color, way past the dipstick marks, about where the dipstick bends at the bottom (so it was not dry).
The car will start with no problem, but will not move.
I tried to move it in all gears, no luck.
The car has a loud shriek sound when the car is in park, and when the gas is pressed.
Is the damn thing fixable, or is the transmission toast??
I can pickup a used tranny at the UandI pick-a-part here for around $250.
How hard is it to replace the transmission, is there something that I can fix on the transmission myself. I called around and this transmission guy said that it could be lots of things, but he first started to talk about the transmission pump not operating.
I would attempt to replace the transmission myself, to gain experience and save money.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

tis toast, they are notorius for failing with age. also
the fluid must be changed religeously every 20 k or the seal between the diff and trans will fail causing the two fluids to mix thus creating the toasty tranny.

yup, sounds bad.
Had mine rebuilt years ago (5) at a very reputable local place. Took a couple of days for them to complete it. Grand total was approximately $1700. At the time it was a big shock, but I knew that I was keeping the car for a long while before this. Works out now to about $340 a year now (spread out over 5) for the tranny.

Autotragics are garbage...
5-speeds on the other hand are bulletproof. As proof I submit Frankenaudi. He blew the passenger side seal and leaked until he leaked no more. The transmission is still strong and it has gone about 20k like that. I have a spare tranny (well, 2 now that the avant is toast!) so I am simply going to drive it until it fails.
