Default Turn Signals/hazards make retarded noises and dont work.....

I put a new Combo. switch ( turn signals hazards cruise, headlights, you know.... the sticks ) in my 5000 because the last one was crap. but anyway, i put it in, and when i use the hazards or blinkers it dosent work it makes this annoying buzzing screeching noise ( kinda sounds like the "most annoying sound in the world" -- Jim Carey Dumb and Dumber) but when i put the old stinky combo switch in it, the signals/hazards work fine??? is there a relay or special box that i need to scream obscenities at?

Heres a pic just to keep everyone happy

Default Re: Yes!

Yes, there is a turn signal/hazard lights relay.
On my Audi 100, it is right behind the dashboard.(speedometer/tach) On your 5000, i'm not sure where exactly it's located. Just listen carefully to figure out where is the noise coming from and you'll find it. Remove your dash to see it.
I'm almost sure this is the reason for your problem - bad relay. I had to replace mine a year ago after i fixed it a few times before that.
Buy an OEM relay only. Mine is BOSCH and it has a number on it - #21, but again, i have a different car.
Good luck!

BTW, the combo switch can still be bad, that's why, if you have a new/better one, replace both now -> relay + switch. My switch went bad only a month after i replaced the relay.

Default Heck no

I already tried feeling and listening, and sniffing, ok maybe not sniffing, is it behind the cluster? is it easiest to remove the knee panel and get to it from there? or behind the cluster? i see a clump of relays, but it didnt feel like any of those. can i take this from a VW or is it a specific 1987 audi 5000s FWD automatic 2.3 red with brown interior, rusted exhaust with dirty factory air filter type relay? ok maybe not that specific. thanks for your help

OK, i think, almost sure, that you can use the same relay i'm using on my car. As long as it's BOSCH and has three terminals. When you see the clump of relays, did you check for #21? I don't think Audi used different numbers for their relays within these 5-6 years ('85-91) Just give it a try and try to find relay #21. Still, i think that you need to remove your dash (speedo/tach) and look carefully behind it.
On my car, this is the only relay located there, Audi chose to put it aside from all other relays located at the knee panel. i'm not 100% sure if they did the same for your car in '87.
Anyone else here with Audi 5000 who can help with turn signal relay location? I'm shooting in the dark.

U r welcome any time! Btw, i'm only 22.
Don't bother listening to your friend and his Civic...it's fast?... yeah right. I had a friend with a 2000 Civic EX, 5 speed, and he was so cocky. Well, he now knows how fast is and older Audi with 3 people in it. A little lesson on the freeway and again on the freeway ramp was enough for him to learn some facts.
Note: Avoid to race your car - you'll destroy it.
Did you mention that your air filter is old and dirty or i misread something? If it's old, replace it ASAP. It's less than $10 and it's good for the engine to have a fresh one. Try to keep up with all the maintenance on this car - top and replace fluids often, replace/inspect filters, belts and check/clean electrical connection any time you can. It will save you big $$$!

I have done lotsa maintenance the 2 weeks that ive owned it, im a previous european car owner ( 2vw's , and also a nice looking Z28 that sucked cuz it wasnt european ) but i ordered a K&N filter, and since im driving a subaru ( my winter car ) instead of my audi for a few more days , i thought it would be safe to let the dirty air filter sit in the driveway with the car, so far i have fixed all the leaks, put it 15w 50 dino oil,w bosch oil filter, bosch w7dtc plugs, new cap , rotor, mineral oil ps fluid. bosch fuel filter, cleaned out the throttle body and air plates, cleaned pcv and replaced hose, flushed engine with cleaner junk, timing belt looks fine so i will trust it until summer , its not the highest priority since this is a non-interference engine ( so i hope, is it?? ) i will be adding bilstien coil overs, and a magnaflow exhaust. im pretty sure that i know the do's and dont's of european cars,

what so bad about a little racing????
have you had bad experiences with breaking stuff?

Default Re: Racing

"Little" racing is not so bad, especially on the freeway. I push my car to triple digit speeds all the time on the freeway if conditions permit and it flyes.
Off the line racing is bad for this car(any other car actually) since the type 44 is relatively heavy car and the tranny is not the greatest by any means, especially the older 3-speed ATs. I wouldn't push them too much or manually shift them 1-2-D. If you don't manually shift them, you can't race, or at least you can't win many "races" because the tranny upshifts too early(1st to 2nd) an you lose some of the acceleration abilities of the car. I had a friend with Audi 200 turbo, he was manually shifting his AT all the time. 6 months after he started doing this, his tranny needed a rebuilt eventhough he was replacing the fluid very often and etc. Blown seals i would guess. Another friend was doing the same thing with his Audi 5k, his AT tranny is currently for rebuilt. I personally never had such an experience with my car (thank God) but as i said, the only place my car gets really pushed is on the freeway and it doesn't complain at all no matter how much i push it - hey, it's and Autobahn cruiser, isn't it.

Default Oh good ol' Racing...

DanA100 is right about the trannys, I raced a couple of times in an 86 5KCS...but that's not what blew my tranny (which I'm still driving with BTW). I didn't race with starting in 1 -> 2 -> D, I just started in straight D and was pretty quick...until it shifted to 2nd gear, that's when the other guy would get a little ahead of me...mind you KZ engine (115hp?) imagine if I used the NF (130) ohh...

Anyway what DID mess up my tranny was revving in park, never recommend it to anyone. While ricers were showing off their little coffee cans in their muffler (ha! with their rev limiters etc., you know how it sounds) I decided to rev it (my muffler was a little "disconnected" (don't know what to call it, small gap between pipe and catalyct converter) which made a kind of nice sound when revved higher than 3K, I revved it ALL the way into the red zone. (it made a lot of ricers turn their heads hehe )then when I was driving away I felt it stayed in 1st gear too long...went to aamco and they told me 2nd gear was gone...but it's still drivable, not like when my Blazer tranny let go (no forward or reverse).

Anyway, I don't kow why I babble so much .

BUT BOTTOM LINE: It is not as slow as people think, oh yea I also hit triple digit speeds on highways when there isn't any cars around. (4 people and 115 mph)

It could probably go higher.
