Default Why is it recommended NOT to tow with turbo cars?? (5kqtw)

Looking at towing an open motorcycle trailer with a 5ktqw... Weight will be no more than 1,000lbs. I read somewhere that you shouldn't tow with a turbo. Why is this? Run a quality synthetic, and I don't see the problem. Afterall, look at tractor trailers - they have turbos... maybe that is like comparing apples to oranges, but a turbo is a turbo, right? Possibly because small turbos designed for gasoline motors run higher turbine speeds than the big diesels?

Anyway, will I fry the turbo if I tow?

Thanks!

Default Turbo's under load create massive amounts of heat

If the car/truck is designed to be able to tow thats fine, if its not you're asking for a cracked manifold....but I don't think I'd be worried about 1000lbs

Default solution:

go by a local Ryan's or all-u-can-eat place and pick all the large people in the parking lot coming out. Invite them into the nice back seat of your car.

NOW GO! LOL

Here's some useful information:
towing should be no problem. My 200 when i bought it was towed by another 200 to my house .. and it did it like a champ. Appox. 20 some odd miles.

I used mine to tow a ski boat 40 miles each way, I've also towed VW's and 4000Q's, the only thing I notice is that the oil temp rises about 15-20C (notice it about 20 minutes in), water temps didn't change by a noticeable amount. I'm running a K24 and it's difficult to stay out of boost towing on the highway that's probably why my oil temp rises, well that and I like to drop the hammer and pass )

Default Pulled my dad's dead '98 Astro van with the '86 TQ...Only problem was the girl that didn't notice

the BRIGHT DAY-GLO yellow tow ropes between the TQ and van, and tried to cross the intersection between us. She honked, my roommate "driving" the van smiled and waved. When we pulled into our destination, we got out laughing, and laughed harder when he said "I think she knew us?" I still laugh at that.

So as long as oil temp does not get too high, I should be fine?

It doesn't sound like your towing that much. Just be a little more attentive to the cars temperature. 2DEGDE who posts on the S4 forum took five bikes down to Daytona from NH in his 5000tqw. I laughed as I saw it drive off. (way too much tong weight LOL)
