Default 3-spoke steering wheel - where/what is the "clamshell" to make the horn work?

Now, it was mentioned that the horn button on my CQ's current 4 spoke airbag version's has some kind of wiring link or attachment somewhere in the steering column (as to not interfere with airbag deployment?).

Here's a pic of the steering wheel I picked up.
<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/tig_bity/IMG_6772.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>
In a previous thread, it was stated that the non-airbag steering wheel has its horn connector wiring in the steering wheel itself (underneath the horn button somewhere I guess).

Now, to get the 3-spoke steering wheel horn to work properly in my CQ, I'll need a "clamshell" (part number and/or picture anyone?) which is some sort of adapter to transmit the horn press to the contact points in the steering column. (I probably botched that explanation up.)

It looks like the gold/bronze pin (which retracts when pressed) is the contact point that the horn button press sends its signal to the actual horn. So this means that there needs to be some kind of contact ring on the steering column that the gold pin comes into contact with at all times. Is that metal ring currently on my CQ?

Where does the "clamshell" reside? In the accordian portion at the base of the steering wheel or in the steering column? Anyone have a picture of one? Or how I can build my own to make this all work?

TIA!

Default Ok, after reading BakerCoupe's explanation... I think clamshell == steering column cover.

I'm trying to get part numbers and verification if the plastic steering column covers with contact rings are RHD and LHD specific. If not, then it might be easier for me to find one. Anyone know if (and what years) of the 80 or 90 have compatible steering column covers, otherwise referred to as "clamshell"?

------------------

Quoting BakerCoupe:
"I cannot remember who sent me the original instructions to get the horn to work, but the basic deal is on the US models the metal horn ring is on the back of the steering wheel, and the Euro models have the metal ring on the clamshell (plastic piece between steering wheel and dash). So when you put a Euro wheel on a US car with a US clamshell, the metal ring needed to complete the circuit between the horn button and the sensor in the clamshell is missing.

Why I ended up getting the clamshell is that my fabbed metal ring did not work 100% of the time. 95% yes, but not 100%. Plus, I could rear the slight rubbing between the metal button and metal ring when I turned the wheel. Just barely, but enough for me...

As for from the UK, there is only one I see on ebay.co.uk right now, starting at 25 pounds, plus at least 20 pounds for post to the US. As for finding the clamshell.... Good luck with that. Rarely found on Ebay, you might try contacting someone at VAG parts, but I am not sure they are the same for RHD vs LHD cars."

Default Need pics of your 80, 90, & CQ steering column, pls! (Are they all the compatible?)

The person I was talking to said the earlier models had the hazards as a stalk. Later models had the hazards as a button on the center dash. iirc, my '91 CQ has the hazard on the center dash. However, I have no access to my CQ, so I'll need your help to jog my memory.

Please post pics of your 80, 90, and CQ steering column covers which show the stalks and where your hazards are.

Also, I don't remember if the ignition key hole is on the steering column or on the dash.

TIA!

I just got my 3-spoke wheel and all the bits needed to install it yesterday. I'm hoping the UK clamshells will work here, but if not I guess I'll have to do some fab work.

Here's a pic of mine, rather beat up(I have the borken bit so I can glue it all back together), but it'll still work I think.

Default Thanks for the details, CvTech!

This means that I don't have to buy the whole "clamshell" steering column cover- just need to find a metal ring!

Nice S2 steering wheel btw...

Hazards are on a stalk, ignition on the dash in a '91 Cq.

That's unecessary. You can just make your own ring to fit on the U.S. clamshell.

Default I have also updated that initial design a bit

I can take more pix to illustrate what I have done better.
