Default Re: 5 speed to 6 speed conversion

not sure why i'd go with a 6spd on the stock 7A. by looking at the ratios of the 01E-6 it'd put you out of the power band after each shift. the S2 has a wider power band, so wider gearing was ok.

i could be off base, but still...it wouldnt gain you much on a stock daily driver. would i do it on a race-only car thats still NA? yeah, probably.

i have a couple JPEGs of several audi tranny codes (and one BMW). been trying to upload them to AW for a while now. its not working so much...

Default Hmmm... - Large pic

I don't really have any to show the whole thing. Trying to fit it all in one frame is tough. I have a few showing parts. It's not something that os easy to shoot, but here goes. I don't want to swamp the forum with bandwidth, but can post a few here and there.

I can do my best to try and describe it;

It starts basically as a double hoop box around the A-pillar/B-pillar. The front down tubes fit behind the dash. It then has diagonal door braces for the front. The front hoop is also tied through the firewall to the strut towers, also with a strut brace between them.
As standard group A FIA rules, there is a diagonal from the rear hoop through the rear bulkhead to the rear towers. Also a diagonal from the point where the drivers diagonal meets the bulkhead to the top of the passengers hoop. Another brace goes horizontal from the rear hoop to the rear bulkhead. And finally a midhigh brace drops from the hoop to the rear of the bulkhead at the floor.

Sorry, not easy to describe. I've got a few others I'll post later to let the BW rest.

Default You're right

You're right, match your power and driving needs to the power and gearing. With my car I want low end, hence massive amounts of bottom end power. Also have a 6spd and a 4.86 final ratio. Am I using all my power to get top end... no.

Default Tell ya what...

How about emailing me pics?

spokes@mail.the-wire.com

Feel free to load the box with photos!

I'm more looking for photos of your attachment points...as I already know how I want the basic bars to run...I just want to get 'mounting' ideas from other people.

Default 6 speed conversion

I like mine. You need the following items. I may miss a couple but you will get the idea.
(1)01e transmission - late model with the wider 1st gear. Can take more load.
(2)The 6 speed is requires an S2 differential behind it.
(3)Shifter gate and linkage
(4)S2 axles and inner CVs. The outer CVs are the right size and will fit, but the inner are larger on the 6speed and you need to change them and the axles.
(5)The existing subframe does not fit the mounts exactly. You have to frabricate a solid shim for the drivers side. Can't remember about the right side.
(6) Because the 6speed and diff are longer you need an S2 drive shaft also.

There may be some more bits and pieces, but that is the basics. By the way, at 100mph you will run at about 4000rpm.
