Got news from my mechanic that a faulty coolant temp sensor was causing my rich running (and therefore failed emissions test) on my 1991 coupe quattro.

Before getting the car back, I checked out vagcat.com for the part number to order so I could do it myself. Looks easy enough, according to diagram sensor is on top of the water sleeve on the head coming from the upper radiator hose.

Ordered Bosch P/N 0280130053 which is cross-listed with OEM P/N 034906161. No problem right??

Well I got the car back this morning and had the mech show me just in case. The temp sensor is on the back of the block right in front of the battery. There is no coolant sensor on the water sleeve.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Vagcat.com diagram indicates the 7A engine... is it wrong or did I search it wrong?

Also, anybody know if above temp sensor will work regardless?

one on the back of the head and one on the driver's side, underneath coolant neck. Replace both - they are cheap...like $20-30ea. Not sure about your part#'s, don't have Etka here..

... i guess that sensor with part# 034906161 is for NG engine. Your (7A) partnumber is 035919369M. The second sensor i've found on scheeme is 034919369C.
