Factory stuff was red/pink i thought. Mine's currently green. I may be **** about the coolant when I put the 10vt in, and use the Audi stuff. Then again, maybe not.

Use DISTILLED water and Pentosin red antifreeze, or Sierra (green) ONLY

Default Apparently...

I have researched this issue at great length because I am am pissed that there is green anitfreeze in my car when it says clearly on the expansion tank use only PHOSPHATE FREE antifreeze. Yes I am a very **** German. But apparently it doesn't make that big of a difference. The red stuff (phosphate free) is used in Europe because most water there is hard. Hard water + Green Stuff = deposits in radiator. Hard water + red stuff = no deposits in radiator. If you used distilled water or you live in an area that doesn't have hard water then there shouldn't be a problem. However something in me wants to see the red stuff back in the expansion tank. The green stuff just doesn't look right. If you do have green stuff though don't just add red stuff cause I think that will turn to sludge. Even if you drain the radiator there is still some in the engine, etc. So switching back to red is hard. Blah.

Default It's not always clear

which anti-freeze is which.

You really need to look at the label. Some green contains phosphates some doesn't, depends. I was just out buying some yesterday, since I usually run just DI H2O, and I don't want it to freeze up. Some of the greens said they were free of phosphates, safe for all metals. Some didn't. I ended up with Zerex red, made for aluminum.

Not a bad idea with any change, to do a good flush. I always use DI H2O, it's not expensive, and you know it isn't going to contain minerals which can cause deposits. For a dollar or two, it's a safe bet.

Howdy! Not all greens are bad. You'll find a fair amount of greeny anti-freeze that is phosphate free. Also if you plan to switch to another "color" the long life pink is a very good and expensive way to go. You have to really flush the system super well, a friend of mine suggested using a Prestone flusher. I have never seen one but I gather you pop it up on the heater core hose and hook your garden hose to it, turn on hose, flush out an open hose, change hoses to flush different sections out, said she got loads of grimy junk to come out. I am still planning on doing this with a tbelt and WP change, but it's getting so damn cold here already...

Cheers,

Default Re: Difference between red and blue Pentosin?

Red is the "lifetime" fluid. Blue is not. Otherthan that, I doubt there are any differences.

I for one don't like the idea of having the same fluids in the car for its entire life...
