better make it a 95 to 97.5 or you're gonna run into the larger splined hole on a 98

Default Early '98s (prior to the '98.5 VIN split) used the same wheel as '95-'97 wheels/airbags... [edit]

...just when they want to the "golf ball" dimples is the one that isn't easily swapped. Any '95-'98 with the "faux rivets" should work though (except tiptronic '98 wheels).

ETKA does confirm that the lower half of the '98 A4 VIN split is the same part as other older 3-spoke airbag wheel equipped cars (as well as '98 Cabrios being the same wheel too).

From the <A HREF="https://www.audiworld.com/tech/misc1.shtml">AW tech section</A> #5:
"Sport steering wheel center hub gets "golf ball dimples" (previously faux rivets) with matching shift ****"

Default My original (3/97) 97 2.8 A4 had the larger splined shaft that wouldnt retro-fit to my sons 95....

so be careful going by "the book" on this one. I would stick with early 97 (max) in spite of what ETKA says. Refunds dont come easy on used parts.

Default So they changed the shaft but kept the same airbag unit until '98 then?

So the wheel itself could be different, but the airbag would work?

Default I dunno about the airbag as once we tried the wheel swap and found it a no-go...

I never looked beyond mechanical fitment. Tho I was able to adapt different airbag terminal ends (spade connectors) when I did the sport wheel conversion on my UrS4.

Default Did your sons have the older 4-spoke airbag wheel or the same that originally was in your '95 90q?

The current wheel I have is out of a late '97...and it works fine. Was a direct swap into my late '95.

Default yep, he later found one from a 96A4 while traveling I-80 across Iowa on his way to Minnesota...

saw a couple Audis in a junkyard off the interstate and got off at the next exit and double-backed to it on the frontage road. Picked it up for $75 and I was pissed when he sold it with his car!
