ATTN: Aftermarket wheel owners...
how wide are your rims...I'm looking at some 17" x 7" rims because I can get them for a good price...the only problem is that they seem narrow to me...is there a big difference between 7" and 7.5" or 8" when mounted? Thanks for the help...the offset is 40 BTW.

I'm running 7.5's. They're good when your suspension is stock, but...
I'm not sure that my 215's with fit once I lower the car. The rims are beautiful though; Borbet type T 16x7.5, with BFGoodrich Comp T/A VR4 215-50VR16's. Looks awesome. The width is excellent for handling. I think the widest you can go with 7" wide rims is 205... which is what I had on my old car. They were okay, but not as good as the 215's.
Cheers,
Mike.

nah...you can run a 215 or even a 225 on a 7" wheel...if i can get a tire i like in a 245, i'm gonna try that on my 7.5" wheels. 3/4" width increase from where i am now (3/8ths per side).
compounds make more of a difference than width. width changes the shape of the contact patch (will not change area), so if you change compounds, you'll notice that before width increase/decrease...
the old BFG's have waaaay more grip than the either of the D60's, and the newer style D60's have more grip than the old style D60. they changed compounds a bit, and changed the tire structure...

I am running a 17"x7.5" 215/45/17 Ronal RT on my 91 coupe Q with stock suspension. The handling has improved a lot when compare with the stock tire wheels. I guess 215 7.5" is the max I can get without rubbing.
