i've aquired a NG Motor for my 4kq.
i pulled the head and the bores look great with original crosshatchings. My question is should i do the rings or just put my new head on it and leave well enough alone?
my current motor is smoking due to worn valve guide seals and i would like to get some more oomph out of the 4kq. not expecting a lot but i know that 15-20 hp will make a noticable improvement. considering the price was right (free).

You should of done a compression check before removing the head.

i decided to go ahead with rings.

best way to clean piston grooves is with the old piston ring. broken for a sharp edge of course.

Main bearings are $33-45 for the set, rods are under $11. Definately replace those for that price...
