Default That historical info is notoriously bogus. They are all aluminum TRUST ME.

You can't beleive everything you read on the internet. Oops, you're reading this on the internet.

Default from what i remember, not much, due to Al block vs Fe.....50, 100 pounds?

maybe even less with the turbo 5 cuz of the turbo and all of the plumbing required

Default All Audi V8's are aluminum, without exception in the US. A8, S8, A6, S6, RS6, S4, V8...

so no worries!

Default Nic's 4.2 coupe came out 100lb lighter than with 20vt

The a/c only saves 35lb so apparently the turbo/intercooler/manifold/etc really start to add up.

I have both engines in my garage right now but my digital scale only goes up to 300lb

Default conclusion...sorta

well, i've gotten lots of good info from many sources and i thank you guys for your help. i think the conclusion is gonna be this: i got a partial parts list for a full on rebuild and it came out to over 2000 dollars....if i want con rods, i gotta add another 900 (!) i'm assuming USD so that works out to somewhere close to 4000 canadian....then there's machining and other crap that i'd do at the same time and i can see myself spending 6000 quite easily. not really worth it for 165 odd HP IMO. i'm SURE i could do the v8 for less.

sooooooo, what i think i'm gonna do is drive it till it's really bad and re-evaluate then. at that point i'm either gonna go for the v8 if the rest of the car is in good shape or i'll buy an A4, or hopefully, an S4.

i guess it means i'm chickening out but in the end, common sense wins out and, really, i don't have the space for such a large undertaking right now.....maybe at some other time though

Default I thought the 3.6 is a lot heavier than the 4.2, and the reason was that it had a iron block...

...my bad. Sorry for the confusion.
